SHOPPING: The village of Plaster Rock has many small shops that feature the work of local craftsman and artists. The town of Grand Falls has the shops and stores of Canada's national store chains. A walk through the stores and malls of Caribou and Presque-Isle, Maine in the United States is possible. If you wish to explore the bustle of a larger Canadian city, a trip to Fredericton, our provincial capitol, is only a 2 hour drive away.

MUSEUMS AND HISTORICAL PLACES: The Plaster Rock tourist park features a small museum with exhibits that typify pioneer life in a lumber village. Lumber was, and still is the village's main economic provider. New Denmark has a replica of the Immigrant House where the Danish settlers spent thier first winter in 1873. The museum displays many artifacts brought by the orginal settlers that demonstrate the tough task of settling a new land. King's Landing Historical Village is located a pleasant two hour drive south, through the St. John River Valley and across the world's largest covered bridge in Hartland. The village features a lumber and grist mill powered by a water wheel. The houses, barns, and blacksmiths shop are open to the public and show life as it was in the 1800s.
Maliseet Nation of Canada's first people is located 40 kilometres south at the mouth of the Tobique River. A settlement older than the Roman Empire is still home to Native North Americans. Maliseet Nation displays artifacts from a culture older than Christianity in a modern 20th century village. Shops sell handmade Native crafts.

GRAND FALLS: The town of Grand Falls is located 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of Plaster Rock. The Saint John River roars over the exposed bedrock and down through the gorge churning the water into a white rage. Through the eons, erosion and weathering have sculpted a wonder of natural wells and rock formations. These can be explored by walking a trail that tours the gorge and falls. You can discover the legend of the The Maliseet Princess Malabeam who led Mohawk warriors to their deaths at the falls, giving it its Maliseet name, Checanenekeag or "Destroyer Place", as you visit the Malabeam tourist Centre where you can browse for a gift or read about the history of the area.
